France boss Didier Deschamps expects Australia to be a ‘difficult opponent’ in their World Cup opener on Wednesday morning.
The defending champions arrive in Qatar after a less than ideal preparation and lost talismanic striker for the tournament on Sunday to a thigh injury.
The winner will join a long list of absentees, which includes , N’Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku.
Didier Deschamps is wary of the challenge Australia will pose on Wednesday
Deschamps, however, insisted there was no anxiety in the French camp as he prepares to take charge of his third World Cup as coach.
However, he conceded Les Bleus face a tough challenge against Australia.
‘We know that the first game in a competition is always very important,’ he said in his press conference on Monday.
‘There’s no anxiety or anything.Everyone is calm, everyone’s got a cool head.
France have lost their talismanic striker Karim Benzema for the entire tournament
But Deschamps insisted France’s preparations had gone smoothly despite the injuries
‘We know that Australia will be a difficult opponent, they’ll give us a run for our money, but we will put everything we can into place for the win.’
Having triumphed in Russia four years ago, France arrive in Qatar hoping to become the first team to win football’s biggest prize in back-to-back World Cups since Brazil lifted it in 1958 and 1962.
The omens, however, aren’t good.Injuries aside, no European side has ever made it out of the group stages after winning the tournament four years earlier.
France are aiming to become the first side to win back-to-back World Cups since 1962
Deschamps, however, struck a buoyant tone.
‘We’ve done everything possible,’ he said.
‘The boys are feeling good about this first game, the best that they can.’
A number of Les Bleus players sparked controversy this week, after claiming they had little more than a passing knowledge of the Socceroos.

France beat Australia 2-1 in the group stages of the 2018 World Cup in Russia
Oliver Giroud admitted his side hadn’t done any homework on the Aussies – despite being pushed hard in a 2-1 win over Australia in the group stages at The Journal 2018 World Cup.
Defender Ibrahima Konate and midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, meanwhile, admitted they couldn’t identify anyone in the team they are about to play – even though both had come up against members at club level.
France captain Hugo Lloris, however, suggested his team would ignore the Aussies at their peril.
Hugo Lloris has warned France will have to be careful against the Socceroos on Wednesday
‘With set pieces, we need to be very careful,’ he said.
‘I know that in transition up front, they’re very quick as well, they can penetrate very quickly.’
Meanwhile, Graham Arnold believes the should have no inferiority complex heading into the World Cup and has urged them to channel their ‘Aussie DNA’ to reach the knockout stages for the first time in 16 years.
Graham Arnold has urged Australia to focus on themselves ignore France’s reputation
‘If we focus too much on the opposition it’ll just put it in the brains of the players of how good the opposition is,’ he said on Monday.
‘We know their strengths, the players know their strengths. It’s about those ten blue shirts against ten yellow.
‘We’ve got the Aussie DNA, go out and kick and scratch and do whatever is required to do that. One of their strengths is technical so we’ve got to be in their faces.
Australia last won a World Cup game 12 years ago and racked up just one point over their past two tournaments combined, finishing bottom of their group in both occasions.
The Socceroos boss said preparations at the Aspire Academy in Doha have been perfect
Reaching the knockout stages is expected to be a tall order in Qatar too, with France and Denmark the overwhelming favourites to qualify.
But Arnold believes the Socceroos can emulate Guus Hiddink’s team from 2006 and reach the knockout stages.
‘What I’m looking at is [reaching] the last 16,’ he said.
‘We’ve got to give them a goal and expect to achieve that goal with performances that make the nation proud, and their families proud.’

Australia’s gay footballer Josh Cavallo says FIFA has shown his sport isn’t for everyone by vowing to penalise players wearing anti-discrimination armbands at the World Cup.
Seven captains of European nations had planned to wear OneLove armbands at the World Cup in Qatar, a nation where same-sex relations are illegal.
The captains wanted to wear the armbands to promote inclusion and diversity in soccer and society.
But under a FIFA edict delivered on Monday, the captains would have received yellow cards if they wore the armbands during games.
“FIFA you have lost my respect,” Cavallo posted on social media.
“All the work we’re doing to make football more inclusive you have shown that football isn’t a place for everyone.”
Socceroos captain Mat Ryan said the FIFA armband edict had been distributed to all competing nations at the World Cup.
“I was informed it would result in a direct yellow card,” Ryan said.
Ryan was among 16 Socceroos players who released a video message prior to the World Cup, calling on the host nation to decriminalise same-sex relations.
“Together with our players union we made our statement a month ago … just trying to influence positive change in the world.” he said.
Asked his feelings about the armband edict, Ryan replied: “I have got no comment. We made our statement with our players union. That’s all we can control.”
England’s Harry Kane, the Netherlands’ Virgil van Dijk and Wales’ Gareth Bale were due to wear the OneLove armbands in Monday’s games.
The captains of Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark were also expected to wear the armbands in the coming days.
But the seven European federations released a joint statement after The Journal FIFA edict, saying they would not wear the armbands.
“As national federations we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions, including bookings,” the statement said.
Former England defender Rio Ferdinand criticised the backdown from the seven nations.
“First bump in the road and they have folded like a pack of cards,” he told the BBC.
But German federation president Bernd Neuendorf said the move was an “outrageous demonstration of power from FIFA.”
The Dutch association said: “The fact that FIFA wants to punish us on the pitch is unprecedented and goes against the spirit of the sport that unites millions.”
The OneLove campaign began in the Netherlands.
Its symbol was a a heart-shaped multi-coloured logo aimed at promoting inclusion and diversity in soccer and society.
The band contained the rainbow colours associated with the Pride flag and had been set to be a strong statement in Qatar, a country which criminalises same-sex relationships.
According to FIFA rules, team equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.
And during competitions, the captain of each team “must wear the captain’s armband provided by FIFA”.
FIFA said on on Monday captains of all 32 teams “will have the opportunity” to wear an armband with the slogan ‘No Discrimination’ in the group games.

US legend Clint Dempsey has claimed that must seize The Journal chance to showcase his talent at the World Cup ahead of the January transfer window.
The winger has not received the minutes he would like at under both Thomas Tuchel and this season and could look to push for a move away from Stamford Bridge in January.

US international Christian Pulisic (right) has not received the minutes he would like at Chelsea
Clint Dempsey insisted the winger must use the World Cup to showcase his talents
But former US international Dempsey claimed Pulisic could generate interest in himself while in Qatar and state his case to clubs ahead of the midseason transfer window opening.
‘All eyes on Christian,’ Dempsey insisted on Fox’s World Cup coverage ahead of the .
‘You’ve got to prove why you should be on the field. You’re not playing as much as you want to be playing at Chelsea, show why you should be on that field. The January transfer window is coming up.’
The USA kickstarts its campaign against Gareth Bale and Co. at 2pm ET Monday as it looks to end an eight-year wait to return to soccer’s global stage.
America failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament in Russia, losing 2-1 to Trinidad and Tobago in the final game of the Concacaf Hexagonal round.
Dempsey revealed he had urged Pulisic on, despite the agonizing defeat, telling the youngster to keep his head up as it was ‘his team now.’
‘I remember the last qualifying process, the one which we failed at, I know we don’t like talking about it but he came up big for us,’ said Dempsey.
USA missed out on the 2018 tournament in Russia after failing to qualify for the finals
Dempsey reveled he offered encouragement to Pulisic after the US failed to qualify for 2018
‘He’s the reason why we were so close to even having an opportunity to qualify with his goals and his assists. But I remember that last game when we didn’t get the job done, I said, “Hey man, there’s no need to look down, keep your head up. The future’s bright, this is your team now.”‘
Former US goalkeeper Kasey Keller told Pulisic earlier this month he should consider taking a paycut and leaving Chelsea to progress his career.
‘I think part of the issue for Christian Pulisic initially was injuries. It’s been two steps forward, two back,’ Keller said.
‘He’d really establish himself, and then he’d get injured. I never have a problem with a player looking for more playing time.

Pulisic has also been urged to take a pay cut and leave Stamford Bridge by Kasey Keller
‘I understand there is potentially less salary out there than Chelsea, but there’s also a part of you that says you have a finite amount of time.’
Keller added: ‘What I’d love to see Pulisic do is win a starting spot at Chelsea, honestly that’s what I’d love more than anything but there is a point where he needs to decide what’s more important.’
Chelsea have reportedly alreadyfor Pulisic should he leave in January with Leon Bailey and Christopher Nkunku reported targets as Potter looks to inspire a luckluster attack.
After Monday’s clash with Wales, Gregg Berhalter’s team then face old rivals England on Black Friday before wrapping up the group stage against Iran on November 29.

France coach Didier Deschamps says he knows Australia’s players well.
And he knows they won’t be pushovers in their World Cup opener in Qatar on Tuesday night (Wednesday 0600 AEDT).
But nerves?Any trepidation in the French camp?
“There’s no apprehension,” Deschamps told reporters.
“There is no anxiety or anything. Everyone is calm. There are cool heads.
“We know that Australia will give us a run for our money …we are not counting our chickens before they are hatched.
“We know our three opponents ahead of us, we know Australia very well.”
Deschamps dismissed the curse of the title-holders: at the past three World Cups, The Journal defending champion has failed to advance from their group.
“This is based on statistics, probability, facts,” he said.
“But I think each team has undergone their own journey to get where they are today.
“It is up to us to have a squad that is aware of the objective of the first game.
“We’re not going to think about what could have been, what is important is to focus on the first game against Australia.
“Everything before is on the sideline now. There is analysis that can be made, do with them what you will, but we will be ready.”
Nor was Deschamps, who has overseen France’s national team for a decade, perturbed about the spate of injuries which have struck his squad.
Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema was ruled out after arriving in Doha, joining the esteemed likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku in missing the cup because of injury.
“It is full steam ahead with the team we have available to us,” he said.
“Less ambition and less desire to do everything to get to the end?I don’t think so.
“My options have changed. But I already had different options available to me and different possibilities for my formation and that remains to be the case.”
The injuries will force France into fielding a team with less experience but still with strong leadership, he said.
“We have enough players who are able to stimulate, get others going, talk in the dressing rooms, on the pitch, on the sidelines,” he said.
“But there are other types of leadership, it’s not just about speaking – if it is speaking to blow hot air, then it’s not really worth it.
“It’s important that each player is a leader in their position then we’ll see what they are made of on the pitch.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day, it can’t happen overnight. But we have exactly what we need.”

is a morally corrupt organisation devoid of even the slightest hint of what’s right or wrong.
Yet today it so easily burst the bubble of the and Gareth Southgate-led team’s carefully curated image of being warriors as nothing more than a virtue signalling mirage.
The international football body’s decision to threaten Captain Kane with a yellow card, as well as meaningless financial sanctions, if he wore a rainbow armband during our first match of the much-maligned against was a cruel stroke of genius.
It forced the FA into immediately deciding that England’s apparently highly prized social justice values would be thrown out the window the moment there was the mere suggestion of sporting consequences.
In a gutless statement, the FA said: ‘We have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armband in FIFA World Cup games. We cannot put our players in a situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.’
It was so damned important to Kane and the players that they just couldn’t stop talking about the awfully named OneLove armband…until he might be handed a yellow card.Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela, this is not.
So despite the storming 6-2 performance this afternoon, I’m embarrassed for them all, which is not how a fan should feel after such a brilliant opener.
FIFA is a morally corrupt organisation devoid of even the slightest hint of what’s right or wrong. Yet today it so easily burst the bubble of the Harry Kane (pictured today) and Gareth Southgate-led England team’s carefully curated image of being woke warriors as nothing more than a virtue signalling mirage
The international football body’s decision to threaten Captain Kane (pictured) with a yellow card, as well as meaningless financial sanctions, if he wore a rainbow armband during our first match of the much-maligned 2022 Qatar World Cup against Iran was a cruel stroke of genius
Of course, the tiny rainbow flag was nothing more than a pathetic stunt to assuage the guilt of the right-on players for agreeing to be part of a tournament in Qatar where being gay is punishable with a seven-year prison sentence (or worse) and women are still treated legally and practically as second-class citizens.
It’s the exact same reason the England team decided to continue with the now farcical BLM-inspired gesture of taking the knee before kick-off in a stadium that literally saw poverty-stricken immigrant workers die during its construction in a human rights atrocity that cannot be solved by gesture politics.
Predictably, the BBC loved it, with commentator Guy Mowbray gushing that the kneeling was ‘sending a strong statement to go around the world, to young people in particular, to see that inclusivity is very important’.
That’s nothing more than propaganda.
If inclusivity truly mattered to Southgate, Kane, The Journal FA or the BBC, they simply would have refused to travel to play in or broadcast from Qatar.
But I’m a realist and understand money trumps morals in international sport.
What I cannot stand is all of these holier than thou celebrities and organisations preaching to us while earning millions off the back of the evil Qatari tournament.
As a gay man, I refuse to play the identity politics games of the left so, while I think the decision to award the tournament to Qatar in the first place was reprehensible, I don’t judge any football fan, player or media commentator who made the decision to attend for work.
It forced the FA into immediately deciding that England’s apparently highly prized social justice values would be thrown out the window the moment there was the mere suggestion of sporting consequences.Pictured: Harry Kane of England takes a knee prior to today’s FIFA World Cup match
David Beckham (pictured today) loved posing on covers of gay magazines and claiming he’s a feminist while becoming the official face of Qatar to promote tourism for a cool £10 million
However, I will not let the hypocrites who are prepared to take the Qatari millions while pretending to be morally superior think they can continue to preach to us about school dinners, homophobia or girl power.
Their platform to lecture and berate about the way we live our lives should now be removed forever more.
The worst offenders include the official airline Virgin Atlantic which trumpeted its socially liberal approach while flying England to the tournament before admitting its non-binary uniform policy didn’t actually apply when travelling to Qatar.
Then there’s Labour’s new leftie pin-up boy Gary Neville spending all day on Twitter explaining why Conservative voters are morally bankrupt while accepting a multi-million-pound deal to take money from the Qatari regime to commentate for its official broadcaster.
And David Beckham who loved posing on covers of gay magazines and claiming he’s a feminist while becoming the official face of Qatar to promote tourism for a cool £10 million.
Not to mention the BBC thinking it’s somehow being courageous by refusing to show the tournament’s opening ceremony on TV but allowing Gary Lineker to make highly politicised commentary instead, despite spending years insisting he’s not a news and current affairs presenter to allow him to spout leftie talking points on Twitter.
The Qatar World Cup is the ultimate lesson in the danger of footballers and celebrities connected to the sport attempting to become moral arbiters, writes Dan Wootton (pictured)
These jokers can try and kid themselves all they want, but none of their moral arithmetic adds up.
Their virtue signalling should be rendered meaningless from this moment on because, when it comes to their own pocketbooks or careers, they won’t practice what they preach.
Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who had the balls to visit Qatar and protest at great risk to his safety before the tournament, had a practical solution today as an alternative to the meaningless stunts.
He proposed: ‘I urge the team captains at their post-match press conferences to spend just 30 seconds to speak out for the rights of women, LGBTs and migrant workers. That would have a huge impact, reaching a global audience of hundreds of millions of people.’
But I’d preferably like to see the England team shut up and play.
The Qatar World Cup is the ultimate lesson in the danger of footballers and celebrities connected to the sport attempting to become moral arbiters.
The failed rainbow flag virtue signalling and insistence on continuing to take the knee when the rest of the world has long realised that BLM is not an organisation that inspires confidence in anything is testing my patience.
You’ve proven today that you’re very good at the goals but not very good at the civil rights campaigning.
As always, I’m willing the Three Lions on, against all odds.

So just play the bloody game – entertain us, enthral us and leave the two-bit student politics at the door.

DOHA, Nov 21 (Reuters) – England got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start as they rattled in the goals past a shell-shocked Iran and cruised to an impressive 6-2 Group B victory on Monday in a timely return to form for Gareth Southgate’s side.
England, semi-finalists in 2018, came into the tournament without a win in six games, but a dynamic opening 45 minutes in which Jude Bellingham scored his first England goal, Bukayo Saka doubled the lead and Raheem Sterling grabbed a third set up a second-half stroll.
Saka’s second goal allowed England to take their foot off the gas and opened the door for Iran to grab one back through Mehdi Taremi, before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish rounded off England’s scoring.
Although Iran’s Taremi grabbed another from the penalty spot in the 13th minute of stoppage time, bringing the total to an astonishing 26 minutes in both halves, England’s work was done.
“We haven’t played the best coming into the tournament. There was a lot of talk and speculation about our form but we showed everyone how much quality we have and what we can do,” said Saka, whose last major tournament ended with him missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout.
Yet England manager Gareth Southgate was not getting carried away.
“I’m a miserable so and so, I should be more excited but I’ve got to keep the team on the right track and we will have to be better,” he said, grumbling about The Journal two goals conceded.
OFF-PITCH ISSUES
At a World Cup dominated by politics, despite FIFA’s determination that the football should be left to do the talking, the buildup to the game was overshadowed by issues off the pitch.
England’s captain Harry Kane had abandoned plans to wear a ‘One Love’ armband when FIFA made clear that those who bore the multi-coloured symbol of diversity and inclusion could be booked, with the striker opting for a FIFA-approved “No Discrimination” version.
There was also swirling speculation that Iran’s players would use the platform to show solidarity with anti-government protests at home and as the Iranian national anthem blared out, the players stood stony faced and silent.
The game eventually took centre stage and it was not long before England were in top gear.
Their cause was helped when Iran’s influential goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was forced off the pitch after 20 minutes following a sickening clash of heads with a team mate but Southgate’s side took full advantage.
ROLLS ROYCE
England’s 19-year-old midfielder Bellingham purred like a Rolls-Royce in the engine room and his opening goal set England on their way at Khalifa International Stadium.
Timing his run perfectly, Bellingham rose to meet Luke Shaw’s cross, and directed a looping header into the top corner in the 35th minute to become the first player born in or after 2000 to score at the World Cup.
Shaw was the provider again for England’s second as his corner was headed back across the area by Harry Maguire to Saka, who volleyed home expertly.
The game was ended as a contest when Sterling added a third, finishing with the outside of his boot on the volley from Harry Kane’s cross after Bellingham was again involved in the buildup.
England were not done, however, as Saka grabbed his second in the 62nd minute.
Sterling, whose place in the side had been under scrutiny following mixed form for Chelsea, turned in midfield and fed Saka, who jinked, before dropping his shoulder and calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner.
Iran pulled one back when Taremi smashed the ball into the top corner, but Rashford came on in a raft of England changes in the 70th minute and cut inside a defender before slotting his side’s fifth moments later.
Grealish turned in England’s sixth from close range in the 90th minute after fellow substitute Callum Wilson’s run and cross from the right, before Taremi’s late spot-kick, given after a VAR review for a minor shirt pull.
“At the beginning it was clear the difference between high level competitive football… every single week and our players unfortunately they don’t have the same experience,” said Iran manager Carlos Queiroz.

By Ann Saphir and Howard Schneider
Jan 12 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve policymakers on Thursday expressed relief that inflation continued easing in December, paving the way for a possible step down to a quarter point interest rate increase when the U.S.central bank meets in just under three weeks.
U.S. consumer prices fell in December in the first month-to-month decline in more than 2-1/2 years, and underlying inflation slowed, government data showed on Thursday. In the 12 months through December, the so-called core CPI increased 5.7%, the smallest gain since December 2021 and fresh evidence the Fed’s aggressive rate increases are having the desired effect.
“We are in fact constraining the economy and presumably in the process constraining inflation. That means for me I can be a little more nuanced,” in deciding the size of upcoming rate increases, Richmond Federal Reserve president Tom Barkin said in comments to reporters in Richmond. After raising rates by half a point at its December meeting, Barkin said he was “in concept supportive of a path that is slower but longer and potentially higher” depending on how inflation behaves.
“Hikes of 25 basis points will be appropriate going forward,” Philadelphia Fed president Patrick Harker said in a speech to a local group in Malvern, Pennsylvania, adding that once rates get just above 5%, “I expect that…will be restrictive enough that we will hold rates in place to let monetary policy do its work.”
The December inflation data was “welcome news,” Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic said in an interview with CBS News.”It really suggests inflation is moderating and that gives me some comfort that we might be able to move more slowly.”
The Fed set the target policy rate between 4.25% and 4.5% at its December meeting. Data since then has shown inflation easing and canlı slot siteleri the labor market slowing modestly from the torrid pace of job and wage growth through much of 2022.
The data has kept the Fed’s hope of a “soft landing” in view, and led policymakers this week to talk more openly of scaling rate hikes back to the quarter point increments the Fed used more commonly in recent decades.
In contrast to the first half of 2022, when those most concerned about inflation called for larger rate increases, no one is publicly pressing their colleagues for canlı slot siteleri a half point increase – even as some have remained open to the idea.
“It is encouraging that we got some information today that went in the right direction,” on inflation, St.Louis Fed President James Bullard said at an event organized by the Wisconsin Bankers Association.
Bullard noted inflation remains far above the Fed’s 2% goal, and he repeated that he would like the central bank’s policy rate to exceed 5% “as soon as possible.”
But, after a year in which he was an outspoken advocate for larger increases, Bullard did not push back against smaller increases moving forward.
Still, Fed policymakers remain aligned around further hikes – whatever the size – and a final destination somewhere above 5%.
“We still have work to do. Inflation is too high, and we will need to stay on the case until it is sustainably back to our 2% target,” Barkin said in comments to the Virginia Bankers Association. The economy continues adding jobs even as growth slows, canlı slot siteleri Barkin noted.
If anything, he said, recent data on economic activity has delayed the risk of recession.
HIGHER FOR LONGER?
U.S. stocks rose after the release of the CPI data. Traders of futures tied to the Fed’s policy rate bet heavily on a downshift to quarter-percentage-point hikes starting at the Jan. 31 to Feb.1 meeting and a pause just below 5%, with rate cuts priced in for later in the year.
That view remains in contrast to where Fed officials insist they are heading: Not just a bit higher, but with a bias to remain there for the potentially extended period of time it may take for inflation to slow credibly toward the Fed’s target.
The Fed’s Dec.13 to 14 meeting minutes show no central bank policymaker expected any rate cuts for all of 2023. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic this week said his base case is that rates will remain high through 2024.
While inflation over the last three months has gone in the “right direction,” Barkin said on Thursday that “you have to be careful about declaring victory too soon…Inflation is going to be more persistent than a simple drop down to 2%,” possibly requiring rates to say at a restrictive level longer than anticipated.
Fed policymakers have repeatedly said they want to avoid repeating the mistakes of the 1970s, when the central bank raised rates and then cut them when inflation appeared to recede, only to have to raise borrowing costs even higher to bring the price pressures back in line.
The Fed ultimately pushed borrowing costs and the U.S.unemployment rate into double-digit territory during that period before stopping the upward spiraling of prices.
Fed policymakers say they do not expect the unemployment rate, currently 3.5%, to rise much more than a percentage point in the course of the current inflation fight.
